Choose the correct rate for the transaction. Zero-rated and VAT-exempt supplies have different tax treatments even though this arithmetic can look the same. Rounding on real invoices may differ.
How it works
To add VAT, multiply the net price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). To remove VAT, divide the gross price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). VAT is the difference between gross and net.
A quick example
£100 net at 20% VAT becomes £120 gross. Removing 20% VAT from £120 gives £100 net, not £96.

Good to know
Which UK VAT rate should I use?
The standard rate is 20%; some supplies qualify for 5% or 0%. The tool does not decide eligibility. Check HMRC guidance for your goods or services.
Does it prepare my VAT return?
No. This is single-amount arithmetic, not a VAT return, invoice system or tax advice.
