A share cannot use a zero denominator. Percentage change requires a positive starting value so increases and decreases remain meaningful.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How it works

A% of B = A ÷ 100 × B. A as a percentage of B = A ÷ B × 100. Percentage change = (B − A) ÷ A × 100, using a positive starting value.

A quick example

20% of 150 is 30. An increase from 80 to 100 is 25%.

What is a percentage point?

Yes for percentage-of and share calculations. The change mode requires a positive starting value.
